The Department of Applied Mathematics evolved from the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics founded in 1957. Now, the department has 85 academic staff, 438 undergraduate students, and 273 graduate students. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in mathematics, system science and applied economics. The department was granted the right to award the Master of Applied Mathematics in 1979 and the right to award the Doctorate of Applied Mathematics in 2000. In 2008, it was designated as a key department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China. In 2011, it was approved as the first grade Mathematical Doctoral Center. Later, it was granted the right to establish its Postdoctoral Research Institute in 2013.
With the target of cultivating innovative talents of science and technology, the department has cultivated a group of diverse high-level scientific talents and outstanding technology managers, including the outstanding scientific and technological achievements of the academicians, Prof. Junzhi Cui of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Prof. Guowei He of Chinese Academy of Science, deputy general manager of AVIC Shenyang aircraft group Xiaoming Xu, the presidents of high education colleges such as the previous president of Xi'an Engineering University Prof. Shoushan Jiang and the vice-president of Xi'an University of technology Prof. Hongxing Zhao, Vice Governor of Henan Province Prof. Jichao Xu who is responsible for provincial economic construction. For 60 years' efforts, mathematics talent training mode has been granted the first prize in the National Teaching Achievement in 2014, which is the unique and first prize obtained as the national higher education mathematics since 2002. After that, the following achievements have also been awarded: one outstanding prize in the Higher Education Teaching Achievement of Shaanxi Province in 2013, and one first prize in the Science and Technology Award of Shaanxi Province in 2016.
In recent years, the department focuses on improving internationally academic influence of mathematics and exploring internationally academic exchanges and joint education. It hosted more than 20 important international conferences, including the 2011 International Conference on Probability and Statistics and the 2014 Ninth International Conference of Computational and Applied Sciences. It invited more than 100 internationally renowned experts, carried out the long-term academic exchanges and cooperation with 10 internationally renowned colleges and universities, including the University of Glasgow (UK), University of Twente (Netherlands), University of Alberta (Canada), and signed the joint training agreement of undergraduate and graduate students with the University of Glasgow (UK), Heriot Watt University (UK) and Queen Mary University of London (UK).
