The Department of Applied Physics was founded in 1987. Now, it has 86 teaching staff, including: 24 professors, 33 associate professors, 18 assistant professors and 11 experimental technology teachers. The department offers three undergraduate degree programs, four Master’s degree programs and three Ph.D. programs, among which the Materials Physics and Chemistry is evaluated as State Key Disciplines.
The Department of Applied Physics has the MOE Key Laboratory of Materials Physics and Chemistry under Extraordinary Conditions, the Shannxi Key Laboratory of Space Materials Science and Technology, the Shannxi Key Laboratory of Condensed Matter Structures and Properties, and the Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Optical Information Technology. The academic staff has published more than 1500 papers, some of which are published in high quality journals such as Phys. Rev. Lett., Adv. Mater., Acta Mater., Appl. Phys. Lett., and Opt. Lett.. The achievement of space materials published in Phys. Rev. Lett. was reviewed by Science and Nature. High Undercooling and Rapid Crystal Growth of Liquid Metals and Alloys Research achievement was awarded the Second Class Prize of National Natural Science Award of China in 2003. In recent years, the department has established comprehensive international collaboration with institutions in Germany, Switzerland, France, America, and etc. In addition to the five graduate students who have studied abroad under joint-supervision, 70 staff have participated in various international cooperation programs, including giving lectures abroad and participating in advanced studies and conferences.
